Some time ago, I reviewed the hField Technology USB wireless device. I consider it a 'sniper scope' of wireless- tuning the whole 365 degrees of the usual antennas into about 5 of this one.
In some of the most rugged wireless environments: college dorms, this device was a trooper! Each unit of the place had some 16 people in it. There were 20 units in the complex. That means as many as 320 people had wireless nodes, and more like 160 actually did.
Imagine trying to get JUST ONE SIGNAL back to your house. Nearly impossible.
Well that same, very-sensitive, highly-tunable 'magic' has been applied to another locale: the distant woods.
My brother's house is so far from the city limits, he'll never get broadband unless it's trucked in by satellite. But somehow the neighbors have it. And because of that, and an agreement with those neighbors, we have it, too.
It's about a 100 ft shot through the tree trunks, but the hField Wifire manages to pull a solid signal out of the trees. Intended for extending range for laptops, my only wish is for a solid tripod-like mechanism I can screw into the wall.
Other than that, the signal and bandwidth is incredible!
